Speculative Commercial for Mutti
SAUCY is a 30-second speculative commercial for Mutti, combining Italian food culture with camp humour, surrealism and a playful queer sensibility.
Creative Strategy
Mutti naturally lives in the territory of home, warmth, authenticity and Italian cooking. The idea was to keep all of those familiar codes, then disrupt them with something completely unexpected.
Destiny, a glamorous drag queen, is making ragù in her nostalgic Italian kitchen when the simple act of pouring Mutti Passata triggers a fantasy: Mario, an impossibly handsome tomato farmer, materialises out of a golden glow.
Flirtation follows. Then a cat ruins everything.
Rather than making queerness the message, SAUCY simply makes it part of the world. The humour comes from the collision between familiar Italian domesticity, heightened characters and an increasingly absurd fantasy, while the product remains at the centre of the story.
The result is warm, sensual, slightly surreal and knowingly camp.
Visual Direction
The visual language draws inspiration from Pedro Almodóvar’s saturated domestic worlds and Martin Parr’s playful observation of everyday life.
I developed a palette I called “Cherry Formica”, built around saturated tomato reds, warm cream, brass and honey-toned wood. The retro kitchen references 1950s Italian interiors, creating a nostalgic environment that feels tactile, warm and slightly heightened rather than perfectly polished.
The photography uses a soft, filmic treatment with warm shadows, subtle grain, halation and atmospheric elements such as cooking steam and golden light.
Direction & Cinematography
The camera stays slightly alive throughout the film, using subtle handheld movement and gentle push-ins rather than perfectly static compositions.
Camera movement follows the comedy: slower and more seductive during Mario’s appearance and the flirtation, quicker and sharper when the fantasy is interrupted.
The edit follows the same principle, moving between sensual food imagery, character reactions and precise comedic beats.
There is no music. Dialogue, sizzling ragù, pouring sauce, fabric, kitchen sounds and one strategically timed meow keep the surreal story grounded in a believable domestic world.
AI Production
The film was developed as an exploration of AI filmmaking and visual direction, using AI across character development, pre-production, image generation and motion.
The main challenge was not simply generating individual shots, but maintaining a coherent visual world across a complete 30-second narrative: consistent characters, environment, product, performance, dialogue, camera language and food photography.
